Metre-scale stress heterogeneities and stress redistribution drive complex fracture slip and fracture growth during a hydraulic stimulation experiment

چکیده

SUMMARY We investigated the induced seismicity, source mechanisms and mechanical responses of a decametre-scale hydraulic stimulation pre-existing shear zone in crystalline rock, at Grimsel Test Site, Switzerland. The analysis reveals metre-scale complexity stimulation, which remains hidden reservoir-scale. High earthquake location accuracy allowed separation four distinct clusters, three were attributed to fractures damage zone. mechanism larger-magnitude seismicity varied by cluster, suggests heterogeneous stress field already prevailing before is further modified during stimulation. In course experiment, redistribution led aseismic initiation tensile-dominated fracture, fourth identified seismic clusters. streaky pattern separated zones without fluid flow conduits along existing fracture planes. observed submetre scale questions forecasting ability hazard reservoir from small-scale experiments.

Hydraulic fracture during epithelial stretching

The origin of fracture in epithelial cell sheets subject to stretch is commonly attributed to excess tension in the cells' cytoskeleton, in the plasma membrane, or in cell-cell contacts. Here, we demonstrate that for a variety of synthetic and physiological hydrogel substrates the formation of epithelial cracks is caused by tissue stretching independently of epithelial tension. We show that the...

Stress Concentrations , Fatigue , Fracture

The fundamental topic in this document is the development of cracks in steel. For structures subjected to cyclic loads, such cracks can develop over time and ultimately reach the size at which some dramatic failure occur. While this problem is rare in structures made of “mild steel,” the use of “high tensile” steel changes that situation. It is straightforward to double the strength of mild ste...

Stress fracture of the capitate.

Stress fracture of the capitate reports A 42-year-old male physical exercise teacher presented to his general practitioner (GP) with a 4-month history of bilateral wrist pain. He was unable to recall any specific episode of trauma, but the nature of his work as a gymnastics teacher required repeated dorsiflexion of both wrists. The pain was enough to keep him awake at night and he had developed...

Stress fracture of the patella.

Stress fractures are rarely an indication for surgical treatment. In our case we decided to operate on the patient because of distraction of the fragments. Solid bony healing took longer than in traumatic fractures, but the good functional result confirmed our regimen.
